World Humanitarian Day!

By Poorvi Pandya and Shweta Siddha-Deshmukh - August 19, 2017

The international community celebrates World Humanitarian Day since 19th August 2009, to pay tribute to the people who have lost their lives and made sacrifice in 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq which killed 22 people, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly to recognize Sergio and thousands like him who work for humanitarian causes and make world a better place!

The humanitarian aid workers around the world work every day at the places of social violence, war affected zones, illness stricken countries, for those facing starvation, for the underprivileged and more. They strive to work for disaster affected communities and to provide rehabilitation and all the assistance regardless of their nationality, religion, sex, race or any other factor. They put their own life at risk and at times sacrifice their lives while working for a cause.

World Humanitarian Day is a day to remember the sacrifice of these heroes, who have been killed in the line of duty and pay tribute to those who continue to help people around the world. This day also aims to highlight the humanitarian needs and assistance activities worldwide and the importance of international cooperation for the same. The humanitarian community organizes global campaigns for the safety of humanitarian aid workers and well-being of people affected by crisis.

How can you support the cause? Take time out and research the war affected countries and the conditions of poor and needy communities. Become part of charitable organizations, find a way to volunteer and do your bit to improve the lives of the needy. Educate yourself and make others aware of the plight of these communities around the world! Reach out and support them whenever/ however you can.

Helping the vulnerable populations in all possible ways will make a lot of difference! Smile and be friendly, donate something you don’t use, buy food for homeless, console someone who is ailing from an illness in a hospital, and forgive someone who is not even sorry for his / her actions! Give hope to someone who has lost all purpose in life, be there when someone you know is in need, sit with them, talk, and help if you can… just express your love. A hug, a kind word, spending time, showing kindness… it all matters!

“It is giving everything, to serve other human beings who are in need of help, not only in emergencies, but whenever they need support, without thinking how one is feeling in that moment. That is who we are, that is what we do.” - Luis from Panama
